Publication Scheme

This publication scheme, which is based on the latest guidance issued by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), sets out what information the University publishes or intends to publish, how the information can be accessed and whether or not a charge will be made for it.

In the Guide to Information, information is grouped into the following broad categories, which are taken from the ICO’s ‘Model Publication Scheme’.

  • Who we are and what we do
  • What we spend and how we spend it
  • What are our priorities are and how we are doing
  • How we make decisions
  • Our policies and procedures
  • Lists and registers
  • The services we offer

Some information is general in nature, and cuts across these categories.

The University has an A-Z listing of academic departments and other units and an A-Z listing of administrative departments and services.

The University Gazette is the authorised journal of record of the University of Oxford. A summary of the items published in the Gazette can be found here. In addition to its weekly issues, it publishes a number of supplements throughout the year, containing a wide variety of statistical and management information.

The University publishes an A-Z listing of its policies.

The University’s Statutes and Regulations contain the internal ‘rules’ that govern the management of the University’s business.

There is a general FAQ, covering a variety of University topics.

Almost all the information is available on the University’s website and signposted through appropriate links listed in the Guide to Information.

Some information is also published in hard copy and can be bought from the Oxford University Press Bookshop e.g. the University Calendar, which lists, amongst other things, term dates; officers and central bodies of the University; as well as  members of committees, divisions, departments, faculties and colleges. Hard copies of other publications are available as indicated on the website.

Most of the information in the scheme can be downloaded from the website free of charge. The University reserves the right to make a small charge for printed copies of some documents available on the website, to cover administrative costs. Charges for documents only available in hard copy are indicated on the website.

The copyright in this publication scheme and its contents is reserved to the University of Oxford.

Queries about the information included within the scheme and requests for information that is not available on the University’s website should be addressed to the Freedom of Information Office.

Information that falls into the following categories is not published as part of this scheme.

  • Information that the University does not hold
  • Information that is exempt from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act or Environmental Information Regulations
  • Information that is archived, out-of-date or otherwise inaccessible
  • Information that would be impractical or resource intensive to prepare for routine release

The Registrar of the University has overall responsibility for the publication scheme.
